Democratic lawmakers are preparing to wield the full power of congressional subpoenas in the 120th Congress. They plan to launch immediate investigations into the administration's handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case, executive spending, and military operations in Iran.

With Republicans still holding the White House, major legislation is unlikely to pass. Instead, the new Democratic majorities in the House and Senate will focus on oversight. Party leaders intend to use their authority to compel testimony and demand records from the executive branch.

Rep. Robert Garcia of California, who is expected to lead the House Oversight Committee, outlined the party's strategy in a statement. He told supporters to "LAWYER UP." This approach marks a shift from the previous term, where the GOP controlled both chambers of Congress.

The Epstein files remain a primary target for Democratic investigators. Lawmakers plan to examine the relationship between the late sex offender and President Trump. Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland, the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, disputed the president's claim that he knew Epstein "just like everybody in Palm Beach knew him." Raskin cited evidence involving 11 women that he said tells a different story about their relationship.

Democrats also intend to scrutinize the financial interests of the president and his family. They plan to investigate business ventures including Truth Social and cryptocurrency projects. Garcia linked these activities to the national cost-of-living crisis. He noted that millions in dark money flow through the political system while the wealthiest Americans grow richer.

The party will expand its investigation into immigration enforcement. Democrats documented hundreds of alleged incidents of abuse by federal agents while in the minority. They plan to hold hearings on violence committed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Rep. Pramila Jayapal of Washington called ICE a "lawless, rogue agency" that is causing generational trauma in communities.

Oversight will extend to the executive branch's use of power and the U.S. conflict with Iran. Democrats plan to challenge the White House's spending on projects such as the East Wing renovation and the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. They will also press Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on the cost of the war. An impeachment vote on Hegseth could occur during the lame-duck session before Democrats take full control.

The new Congress will also examine the operations of Elon Musk. A group of Silicon Valley House Democrats sent a letter to the White House in October. They promised to scrutinize federal funding for Musk's businesses, including Starlink. They will check if the companies meet contractual obligations and if safeguards exist against political interference.
