The 2026 midterm elections concluded on Tuesday with a decisive shift in power in Washington. Hakeem Jeffries, a New York Democrat, will assume the role of House Speaker in January. He is set to become the first Black person to hold that position in United States history.
Jeffries addressed a crowd of supporters in Washington, D.C., declaring that America is back. He stated that voters have rejected political extremism and corruption. His party plans to prioritize affordability upon taking control of Congress. The legislative agenda will focus on four key areas: affordable housing, education, healthcare, and retirement benefits.
"We're going to fight to make sure that we make this country affordable for every single American," Jeffries said. He characterized the vote as a change election. He noted that things are broken and that the new leadership must put the American people first.
The election results end the Republican control of the lower chamber. Voter anger over the economy, the Iran war, and high living costs drove the turnout. President Trump will no longer have a GOP-led Congress to support his agenda. This change accelerates his lame duck status in the final months of his second term.
Democrats face challenges in passing legislation. President Trump retains his power to veto bills. Conflicts are expected over affordability measures. Jeffries acknowledged that Republicans outspent his party in races across the country. He said the financial deficit was significant. The party promised to focus on accountability and rooting out corruption in high office.
Outgoing House Speaker Mike Johnson spoke to supporters in Shreveport, Louisiana, after the results were in. He described the democratic process as a grand experiment not controlled by a monarch. Johnson said he left it all on the field to retain control. He admitted that the odds were unfavorable. "From the first day of this election, we knew that to keep the House and sustain our majority we'd have to defy more than a century of midterm history," Johnson said. He added that history has been kept tonight.
The transition to the new leadership is scheduled for January. The Democratic caucus will begin work on their legislative calendar immediately. The first major vote on the affordability package is expected in the first quarter of 2027.
