The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 10-1 on Monday night at Tropicana Field.
The victory moved Milwaukee within one game of winning its first World Series title. The team had trailed the series 3-0 after the first three games.
Jackson Chourio led the offensive charge with four hits and a stolen base. Brice Turang contributed two runs, and Robert Gasser delivered a dominant pitching performance. These three young players drove the team to a decisive win.
Gasser, a rookie left-hander, allowed only one hit through six innings. He faced the minimum 18 batters. He became the first starter to achieve this milestone in a World Series game since Curt Schilling in 2001. No left-handed pitcher had done it since Sandy Koufax in 1965.
The Brewers scored eight runs in the fifth inning. They recorded seven consecutive hits, all with two outs. This set a postseason record. The team had previously won eight straight games, tying the record for a single postseason run.
Chourio began the fifth inning rally with a single and a stolen base. Christian Yelich walked, and William Contreras singled to load the bases. A replay review overturned a forceout at second base. Turang then hit a two-run single that bounced off shortstop Taylor Walls. Garrett Mitchell added an RBI single. Cooper Pratt hit a two-run double, and Sal Frelick scored on a line drive double. The Brewers extended their lead to 8-0.
Manager Pat Murphy praised Chourio's performance. Murphy said, "He was tremendous. Locked in. Gives us a big lift." Chourio, who is 22, became the second-youngest player with four hits and a stolen base in a World Series game. Ty Cobb holds the record from 1908.
Tampa Bay starter Freddy Peralta allowed five runs and seven hits in four and two-thirds innings. Rays manager Kevin Cash noted that Peralta felt good but was out of sync. Cash said, "Just inconsistencies in and out of the strike zone led to a bunch of really good at-bats by the Brewer lineup."
The Rays, who led the American League with 98 wins, now face elimination. They have never won a World Series in 29 seasons. Their previous appearances ended in losses to the Phillies in 2008 and the Dodgers in 2020.
Game 4 is scheduled for Tuesday night at Tropicana Field. Tampa Bay will start pitcher Griffin Jax. The Brewers have not announced their starting pitcher. A win for Milwaukee would make them the first team to sweep a League Championship Series and the World Series since the 1976 Cincinnati Reds.
