That is the number of times a team has taken a 3-0 lead in the World Series and gone on to win the championship. The Tampa Bay Rays face that historical wall on Wednesday evening when they host the Milwaukee Brewers for Game 5 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg.
The Rays avoided a sweep Tuesday night by scoring two runs in the bottom of the 12th inning. Junior Caminero reached first base on a fielding error, and the team followed with four consecutive singles. Second baseman Ben Williamson delivered the game-winning hit to right field, capping a rally that beat Milwaukee 4-3. The victory cut the Brewers' series lead to 3-1 and kept the Rays' franchise-first title hopes alive.
Tampa Bay entered the series seeking its first championship. Milwaukee won the first three games to put the Rays on the brink. The Brewers took Game 1 by a score of 3-2. They rallied from a four-run deficit to win Game 2, 5-4. In Game 3, Milwaukee scored eight runs in the fifth inning to secure a 10-1 victory.
The series stands at 3-1 in Milwaukee's favor. If the Rays win Wednesday's game, they will force a Game 6 on Friday, Oct. 30, at American Family Field. A loss for Tampa Bay would end the season and give the Brewers their first World Series title. The game is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET and will air on FOX, FOX Deportes, and FOX One.
Right-hander Jacob Misiorowski will start for Milwaukee. He started Game 1, allowing one run on four hits over five innings. The Rays have not announced their starting pitcher as of Wednesday morning. They will need to manage their bullpen after the 12-inning game Tuesday and generate offense against the Brewers' pitching.
No team has ever come back from a 3-0 deficit to win the World Series. Four teams won Game 4 after falling behind 3-0, but all four lost Game 5. The only best-of-seven postseason series in which a team overcame a 3-0 deficit was the 2004 American League Championship Series, where the Boston Red Sox beat the New York Yankees.
