Orlando pianist Assel Jean-Pierre Jr. is releasing his first original music after a 25-year career focused primarily on performance. The musician, who holds degrees in both classical and jazz, has previously released albums featuring Christmas standards and children's hymns. His new work marks a shift from interpreting other composers' pieces to showcasing his own songwriting.
Jean-Pierre's debut original single, "Canonge," is currently available on streaming platforms. The track draws inspiration from Martiniquan pianist Mario Canonge and Dominican artist Michel Camilo. It combines technical classical precision with Caribbean rhythmic elements. "It has energy, it's rhythmic, and it also pays homage to my Haitian roots," Jean-Pierre said. He described the song as the first piece that truly reflected his artistic identity.
A second single titled "Kinel" releases on Friday, Nov. 6. Jean-Pierre wrote this song with his late uncle, Kinelly Jean-Pierre. The composition existed only as a voice memo for many years. The pianist recently completed the recording, transforming the sketch into a jazz piece with Afro-Cuban and Latin influences. The track serves as a personal tribute to his uncle's musical vision.
Jean-Pierre's background includes formal training in multiple genres. He has performed at major venues, including Carnegie Hall and the NFL Pro Bowl Halftime Show. His musical style blends elements from his native Haiti, the Caribbean, gospel, and contemporary music. This mix allows him to create a distinct sound that differs from his previous instrumental renditions.
The pianist will perform live this weekend as part of the Assel Jean-Pierre Jr. Trio. The group includes bassist Daven-Roy Llewellyn and drummer Johnbern Thomas. Vocalist Sheimyrah Mighty will also join the performance. The concert is scheduled for 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Blue Bamboo Center for the Arts. The venue is located at 460 E. New England Ave. in Winter Park. Tickets range in price from $21.72 to $37.25.
Jean-Pierre noted that the new singles represent a milestone in his professional journey. He stated that the music allows him to express the full range of his musical influences. The release of these two tracks establishes his presence as a songwriter in addition to his established reputation as a virtuoso performer.
