The U.S. economy expanded at an annual rate of 3.4% from July through September.

The Commerce Department released the gross domestic product figures on Thursday. This pace outpaced the 2.2% growth recorded in the previous quarter. The acceleration was fueled by two primary factors: massive capital expenditures in artificial intelligence and persistent consumer spending.

Technology firms led the investment surge as they continued to construct data centers and develop new models. These outlays contributed heavily to the overall economic output. On the spending side, higher-income households drove demand. These earners retained purchasing power despite persistent inflation, while lower-income groups faced tighter budgets. Wage growth has lagged behind price increases, squeezing many middle-class and lower-class Americans.

The robust growth figures arrived just days before the midterm elections. Many voters report feeling pessimistic about their financial situations. Inflation remains a central concern for daily necessities. Additionally, the ongoing conflict with Iran has pushed energy prices, including gasoline, higher. Siri Steven, a manager at a resale store in Decorah, Iowa, described her family's financial caution. "We barely go out to eat now," she said. "I really have to be mindful of our budget and make sure that we can pay all our bills and not overdraft." Her household operates on a paycheck-to-paycheck basis without savings.

The personal saving rate fell to 3.8% in September, down from 4.1% in August, according to the same Commerce Department report. Prices rose 3.6% in September compared to the previous year. This rate exceeds the Federal Reserve's 2% target. The central bank held benchmark interest rates steady on Wednesday. The September inflation data adds pressure for a potential rate hike at the December meeting. Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics, noted that growth feels delicate despite the strong GDP numbers. "We're growing," Zandi said. "The economy is moving forward but it's a very, very fragile growth. It doesn't feel like we're kicking it in on all cylinders." His assessment reflects concerns about the long-term fiscal health of the country amidst trade policies and military costs.
