Young workers carry heavier debt loads than previous generations
TransUnion data shows Gen Z members hold 12% more debt than a year ago, driven by student loans and housing costs.

Young adults in their 20s now face a heavier financial burden than Millennials did at the same age. This shift has pushed many into a state of financial precarity where monthly bills consume most of their income, leaving little room for savings or emergencies.
New data from TransUnion confirms this trend. Ted Rossman of Money Management International, a nonprofit credit counseling agency, notes that the agency has seen a 35% increase in requests for help from Gen Z clients over the past year. For those clients, total debt loads have risen by approximately 12% compared to the same period last year.
The primary drivers of this increase are student loans, high rental costs, and the widespread use of buy now, pay later services. Rossman explains that the years immediately after graduation are typically the most expensive for establishing a household. He states, 'You have student loans, you have high housing costs. Those household formation years are very expensive, so GenZer’s actually have more debt than Millennials did at the same age, even adjusted for inflation according to TransUnion.'
Rossman advises young borrowers to track their budgets closely and monitor their spending on installment plans. He warns that while these plans often offer interest-free periods, they still represent a debt obligation. 'It’s very popular among people in their 20’s, but it’s still debt,' he said. 'It can work in your favor. Sometimes you can get a good deal, but just be mindful that it’s not a free lunch.'
The risk escalates if payments are missed or if balances are carried over. Rossman points out that interest rates on credit card debt often reach the 20% range. For those who feel overwhelmed by these obligations, he suggests seeking assistance from credit counseling agencies to create a manageable repayment plan.
