The Art of Elysium will honor rock photographer Henry Diltz at its Dec. 12 gala, held at Hollywood's Chaplin Studios. Diltz is named Heaven Visionary for the evening. The role comes with a one-night installation he will curate, built around his idea of heaven: a green setting recalling Laurel Canyon and Woodstock, where he shot many photos he is known for.
Diltz has photographed America, The Doors, The Eagles, James Browne, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, The Mamas & The Papas, The Monkees and Neil Young. His images have appeared on album covers. The event is co-chaired by John Mayer, Alix and McG Nichol, Faryal Ganjehei and Sima Morrison. Rain Phoenix, sister of Joaquin and River Phoenix, receives the Spirit of Elysium honor for her work with the communities the organization serves. Elijah Wood and Chris Holmes will DJ.
Jennifer Howell, founder and CEO of The Art of Elysium, said Diltz has "a remarkable gift for making people feel comfortable enough to reveal who they are." She said that spirit sits at the center of the group's work, "bringing artists and communities together to create moments of connection and possibility." Howell added that the group is "honored to have him as this year's Heaven Visionary" and will support him as he brings his world to life at Chaplin Studios, a site she links to his history with musicians who made recordings there.
Money raised that night goes toward The Art of Elysium's work with people facing illness, isolation, displacement, disability, emotional challenges and major life transitions, offering connection, belonging, dignity, participation and expression.
Diltz's installation runs for one night only, Dec. 12, at Chaplin Studios.
