Disney has released a 15-title "essential viewing" list for fans preparing for "Avengers: Doomsday," which opens in theaters on Dec. 18. The studio says the curated selection is necessary because the current film contains storylines that span nearly two decades of Marvel content. Ticket presales have already surpassed $50 million, signaling high demand for what Disney is calling its most ambitious crossover since "Avengers: Endgame."

The pressure to catch up has driven a wave of social media activity. David Alfonso, a self-described hardcore fan, posted a TikTok video on Aug. 3, 2026, titled "POV: 'Avengers Doomsday' is in 4 months and 14 days but you're only 1 movie in." As of the report, that single clip has accumulated more than 10.6 million views. Alfonso represents a segment of the audience that views the upcoming film as a comprehensive test of their knowledge of the franchise.

Disney issued the watchlist in September. It was made public quietly, without a major press event. The list includes three specific categories of films: the original X-Men movies from 2000 and 2003, multiverse-focused projects such as "Spider-Man: No Way Home" and "Loki," and recent team-building stories like "Thunderbolts" and "Captain America: Brave New World." The selection excludes the majority of the 56 titles currently in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Eduardo Arias, a media professor at the University of Miami and former executive at Paramount and Sony, explained that the list serves a practical function. He stated that there is too much Marvel content available for the average viewer to track. "A curated list helps fans focus on the stories that are relevant and makes the commitment feel more manageable," Arias said. He noted that understanding past character conflicts is required to appreciate the payoff in the new film.

Ana Francois, a media management professor at the University of Miami and former director of TV distribution for MGM and Universal Studios, offered a different perspective. She argued that the list is primarily a marketing tool rather than just a narrative aid. "I believe it's more about marketing, but in entertainment industries, you cannot truly separate marketing efforts from storylines, they're intertwined," Francois said. She suggested the list helps combat "Marvel fatigue" by giving casual viewers a manageable entry point.

The specific titles chosen bridge the gap between the original X-Men films and the current multiverse mechanics. The list includes "X-Men" (2000), "X2: X-Men United" (2003), "Captain America: The First Avenger" (2011), "The Avengers" (2012), "Avengers: Infinity War" (2018), "Avengers: Endgame" (2019), "Loki" (2023), "Spider-Man: No Way Home" (2021), "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" (2022), "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" (2021), "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" (2022), "Captain America: Brave New World" (2025), "Thunderbolts" (2025), "Deadpool & Wolverine" (2024), and "Fantastic Four: First Steps" (2025).

Both experts agree the list is designed to reduce the feeling of being overwhelmed by the franchise's size. The selection directs attention to relationships and major events that are expected to matter most in the new film. Disney is betting that these 15 titles provide enough context for audiences to follow the arrival of Doctor Doom without requiring a full rewatch of the entire library.

The film is scheduled for a wide theatrical release on Dec. 18. Disney has not indicated if the list will be updated or if additional promotional materials will be released before that date. The studio continues to push the narrative that the upcoming movie is the culmination of recent storylines involving mutants, the multiverse, and new superhero teams.
