Jacobe Smith recorded a knockout victory in just 73 seconds during his mixed martial arts debut, a performance that mirrors a childhood memory he cites as the moment he decided to pursue the sport.

The sixth-grader jumped from a stump to strike an older neighbor who had insulted his mother outside their family home. The high school senior fell into the yard, rolling in pain. Smith told CBS Sports that the physical reaction to the verbal disrespect changed his perspective on fighting. He stated that the incident made him realize he belonged in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Smith faces Randy Brown on short notice at the UFC Fight Night co-main event this Saturday. The welterweight prospect brings a history of physicality that predates his professional career. His father, a former Oakland Raiders draft pick, competed in tough-man fighting competitions and reportedly earned up to $20,000 in a single night. His mother, a Junior Olympic volleyball player, was known for her defensive instincts.

Smith recalled an incident at a nightclub where his mother reached past his father to stab another man in the chest during a verbal confrontation. The fighter said he inherited his aggressive temperament from his parents, though he distinguishes his controlled rage in the cage from the uncontrolled reactions of his childhood. He noted that he is equipped to end fights through wrestling, choking, or striking, and he urged his welterweight opponents to prepare accordingly.

His path to the promotion was not without financial struggle. Smith trained under Daniel Cormier at the American Kickboxing Academy in California but returned to Dallas when the cost of living became too high. He subsequently joined Fortis MMA, where he left recently to start his own gym after disagreements with leadership. He continues to fly to Washington, D.C., for part of his training camps with former teammate Geoff Neal.

Smith has maintained an undefeated record while building a reputation for physical intensity. He recently entered a public dispute with veteran Kevin Holland, a former ranked fighter. The two exchanged direct messages after Smith requested a matchup following his latest knockout. Smith said he does not shy away from the animosity and plans to continue the conversation if the two meet outside the octagon.

The promotion appears to be moving Smith toward the upper tier of the division. While he has not received a guaranteed ranked opponent next, he spoke with matchmakers and Cormier about his future. Smith suggested that his next bout could be against a fighter in the Top 15 or even the Top 5, depending on the final decisions made by the promotion.
