Five key findings emerged from a year of tracking voters who changed their party allegiance. These individuals supported Joe Biden in 2020 but voted for Donald Trump in 2024. They participated in the Swing Voter Project, a series of monthly online focus groups. The sessions are hosted by messaging firm Engagious and market research recruiter Nelson Recruiting. NPR partners on the initiative.

The group first formed after the 2024 election cycle. Throughout 2026, participants have discussed their views on President Trump, key political issues, and their likely choices for the upcoming election. The project aims to understand the mindset of voters who frequently switch sides.

The data shows these voters quickly became dissatisfied with President Trump. Participants can draw a direct line between specific presidential decisions and their feelings about the economy. Their frustration with the administration is distinct from their previous support for the Democratic candidate.

However, the Democratic Party also faces challenges. The focus groups indicate that Democrats are not particularly popular with this group either. Instead, a convergence appears between voters on the left and right. Both sides show strong support for economic populism.

Concerns about technology also rank high. Participants express broad worry about artificial intelligence. They specifically cite the proliferation of data centers as a major issue. This technological anxiety cuts across traditional political lines.

NPR will air a special hour-long discussion titled "Swing voters and the issues that matter." The segment is scheduled for broadcast just ahead of Election Day. Ben Swasey edited the program, while Lexie Schapitl produced it. The discussion will feature the five takeaways and additional commentary from the voters.
