As Israel votes Tuesday, the debate centers on whether to trust the Prime Minister's judgment or that of a military chief who reportedly resisted a key order.

The final day of Israel's election campaign has centered on a single question: who can voters trust to handle the threat from Iran? Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu argues that his experience is the only barrier preventing a second Holocaust. His opponents counter that he has conflated national security with his own political survival.

On Sunday, Netanyahu shared an artificial intelligence-generated image of a nuclear explosion over Tel Aviv. The post included a warning that his defeat could leave Israel vulnerable to catastrophic attack. This move shifted the debate from policy preferences to the necessity of his continued tenure.

The campaign's final push coincides with a report from N12 News about a confrontation between Netanyahu and Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir, the head of the Israel Defense Forces. According to the report, Zamir resisted an order for an undisclosed military operation that defense officials believed could trigger a conflict with Iran. Zamir reportedly requested further deliberation and signed documentation regarding the operation's legal authorization before proceeding.

Netanyahu denied any tension with the military leadership over this issue. He stated that the reports of a dispute were inaccurate. However, the timing of the report gave his political rivals a tool to challenge the Prime Minister's claim to exclusive judgment on security matters.

The report forces voters to weigh two competing narratives. One view suggests that military professionals are attempting to restrain a Prime Minister whose political instincts are overriding security needs. The other view sees the report as a late-breaking story designed to damage Netanyahu's standing just days before the vote. Anonymous sources, while standard in security reporting, remain subject to scrutiny regarding their motives and the timing of their disclosures.

The shadow of the October 7 attack complicates this trust calculation. That day exposed failures in both political leadership and the security establishment. For many voters, the military's failure to prevent the Hamas attack undermines the automatic deference usually granted to professional judgment. Conversely, Netanyahu's role as Prime Minister on that day means he also shares responsibility for the disaster.

This creates a difficult choice for the electorate. If the military leadership's credibility was shaken by the October 7 intelligence and preparation failures, why should its current judgment on Iran carry more weight? Yet, if the political leadership's credibility is equally damaged, voters must decide whether to trust a different set of leaders to manage the same threats more responsibly.

The election results on Tuesday will determine the coalition that governs Israel. While the government will face many issues beyond the Iranian threat, the campaign has narrowed the choice to a test of trust. Voters must decide whether to believe Netanyahu's warning that the danger is too great to replace him, or the opposition's argument that it is too great to leave him in place.
