The Israel Defense Forces issued a clarifying statement on Monday.
The military addressed a wave of media reports describing a conflict between Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The core of the dispute involves a potential military action against Iran.
The IDF statement did not deny that Zamir blocked the prime minister from proceeding with the action. The military cited concerns that political factors might influence the decision-making process. Officials stated that the army remains focused on national security and operates independently of political parties.
The statement noted that the IDF is on high alert across all fronts. It described the current period as sensitive due to upcoming elections. The military emphasized that its operational decisions rely on security and professional standards. It characterized other discussions as misleading and irrelevant to the mission.
Channel 12 reported on Sunday that the two leaders clashed over the move. The proposed action was expected to trigger a rapid escalation in the conflict with Iran. Security officials told the network that Zamir requested a deep discussion and formal authorization before executing the order.
Sources familiar with the details said that Zamir and other senior IDF leaders feared the political echelon intended to use the Iranian front for electoral gain. This concern led to the pause in the operation.
Netanyahu denied the existence of a confrontation late on Sunday. Speaking on Channel 14, he stated that someone was attempting to obscure the fact that Zamir had previously said Iran was trying to interfere in the elections. The prime minister asserted that there was no direct conflict between the two leaders.
