Dave Doeren is no longer the head coach of NC State football. The university announced his dismissal on Tuesday, October 27, bringing an end to a 14-year tenure that spanned nearly a decade of the modern college athletics era. The decision follows a season where the Wolfpack failed to reach the 10-win mark, a threshold Doeren never achieved despite leading the team to seven or more victories in ten separate years.

Doeren’s departure marks the close of a period defined by stability rather than breakthrough. During his time in Raleigh, the program secured a spot in the AP Poll in almost every year from 2017 through 2024. He added roughly 100 wins to the school record and maintained near-capacity attendance at Carter-Finley Stadium for several consecutive years. Despite these metrics, the coaching staff and administration determined that the time was right for a change.

The coach’s style was often described as tenacious and driven. Former athletic director Debbie Yow characterized him as a man of integrity and a player’s coach upon his hiring in 2012. Yow noted at the time that Doeren was an overachiever who challenged those around him to refuse the status quo. In practice, however, the program became associated with that very status quo, frequently finishing seasons with a few unexpected losses that kept the team just short of the national conversation.

Challenges in player development became more pronounced as the transfer portal and Name, Image, and Likeness deals reshaped the sport. Doeren acknowledged the financial disparities in college football, telling reporters that there are haves and have-nots regarding how much money schools possess. He stated that this is where football currently stands. This shift contributed to higher roster turnover, which complicated the player development process that had been a central pillar of his coaching identity.

Beyond the gridiron, Doeren established himself as a community figure. He collaborated with the local nonprofit GiGi’s Playhouse for an annual Victory Day event. He and his wife Sara also founded OnePack Empowered, a program designed to support students with executive functioning challenges. In his final press conference, Doeren highlighted his role in helping student-athletes become men, emphasizing the character strengths of his players even when discussing game decisions.

Doeren also intervened in specific player cases, including writing to a federal judge to support the eligibility of fifth-year defensive lineman Katron Evans due to family hardships. His rivalry record against the University of North Carolina stood at 9-4, a streak that remains intact following his departure. The last year saw a double-overtime victory over the Tar Heels, capping a recent run of success in that specific matchup.

The university will now search for a successor to fill a position that comes with high expectations and a dedicated fan base. Doeren left the program with a final message of gratitude, stating he leaves with no grudges and a desire to see the institution continue to make an impact. His final quote emphasized his love for the place and his belief in its future potential.

Doeren’s time at NC State ended on a quiet note compared to the chaos of modern coaching changes. The next head coach will inherit a program with a strong foundation but a history of near misses. The transition begins immediately, with the search for a new leader to guide the Wolfpack in the upcoming season.
