Five people sustained gunshot wounds during two separate incidents on Halloween night near the Michigan State University campus in East Lansing. East Lansing Police Chief Jennifer Brown confirmed the details during a press conference on Sunday afternoon.
The first shooting occurred near the intersection of M.A.C. Avenue and Linden Street. Officers reported that multiple shots were fired, resulting in three individuals being transported to the hospital. Brown stated that two of these victims are in stable condition, while the status of the third has not been determined.
A second incident followed later that night in the area of Stoddard and Frye Avenues. Two additional people were shot and are currently listed in stable condition. Police recovered several firearms from the scene, though officials have not confirmed if those specific weapons were used in the attacks.
Brown noted that several individuals were taken into custody in connection with the violence. The department is still determining if the two shootings are related. It remains unclear whether any of the five injured victims are enrolled students at the university.
A spokesperson for Michigan State University stated that the Department of Police and Public Safety assisted local officers. The spokesperson clarified that the criminal activity did not occur on university grounds and did not pose a direct threat to the campus community.
The East Lansing Fire Department reported responding to 91 total incidents over a 24-hour period. Of those, 75 occurred leading into Halloween night.
