Gabriella Trabrau and Kevin Carrasco face child neglect charges following the discovery that their four-month-old daughter had four broken ribs. Police reports indicate the parents brought the infant to Nicholas Children’s Hospital after hearing a cracking sound and observing the child cry uncontrollably. Medical staff identified one rib fracture as healing and three as acute.
The couple resides in a gated subdivision in Southwest Miami-Dade. During the investigation, Carrasco told detectives he believed an unidentified person had abused his daughter. He denied causing the harm himself. A child protection team concluded that the specific pattern of rib fractures was consistent with abuse rather than accidental injury.
A judge presiding over the arraignment noted the severity of the injuries on such a young child. The judge ordered the parents to stay away from the infant pending further review by the dependency court. The judicial officer stated that someone had abused the child and emphasized the need for a thorough investigation before custody decisions are finalized.
Both defendants were released on $2,500 bonds each. The court instructed them to secure private legal representation, though it remained unclear at the time of filing whether both had already retained attorneys. Trabrau was observed with her head down during the proceeding.
The Department of Children and Families is currently determining who has legal custody of the child. NBC 6 has contacted the agency for an update on the infant’s current living arrangement while the case proceeds.
