Malachi Toney suffered an ankle injury during practice on Wednesday, creating uncertainty about his availability for Miami's matchup against Notre Dame this weekend. The Hurricanes, who are ranked No. 1 in the College Football Playoff, will face No. 4 Notre Dame on Saturday. Miami's athletic department stated that Toney is currently being evaluated by the team's medical staff. They promised to share further updates as the situation develops, but the initial statement did not specify whether the receiver is expected to take the field.
Toney has managed ankle issues earlier this season without missing a single game. However, his absence would be a major setback for the undefeated Hurricanes. Notre Dame fields the top-ranked defense in the nation. Toney ranks second in the Football Bowl Subdivision with 73 catches and 1,027 receiving yards. He is also tied for second with 13 touchdown receptions. If he plays with a limitation, Miami's offensive production could be significantly reduced.
Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman praised Toney earlier in the week, calling him as good as anyone he has seen. The two teams met last year, with Miami winning a contest that secured the Hurricanes a spot in the playoff field. That victory kept the Irish out of the tournament. The upcoming game has been anticipated as a clash between two elite programs, with specific attention focused on the matchup between Toney and Notre Dame cornerback Leonard Moore.
Toney carries a heavy workload for Miami, accounting for 35% of the team's catches, 39% of its receiving yards, and 46% of its touchdown receptions this season. He is a Heisman Trophy favorite alongside quarterback Darian Mensah. The Hurricanes lead the nation in several offensive categories. Toney has played in all 24 of Miami's games since enrolling at the university. He is currently 18 catches away from tying the school record of 200, a mark set by Xavier Restrepo over five seasons.
The receiver holds several other school records. He set a single-game receiving record with 234 yards during Miami's opening win at Stanford. He also broke the school record for receptions in a game with 16 against Pitt last month. His 2,238 career receiving yards place him sixth in Miami history. He needs three more career touchdowns to tie Michael Irvin for the most in school history. The medical staff will provide additional details on Toney's condition in the coming days.
