The final day of early voting in Alachua County arrived with live gospel music and free food rather than lines and ballots. The African American Accountability Alliance partnered with other local organizations to hold an event called Empowerment Sunday near the county Supervisor of Elections Office. The gathering took place on November 1, two days before the general election.

Organizers aimed to reframe the voting process as a community activity rather than a solitary civic duty. They specifically sought to emphasize Black voter participation in the 2026 cycle. Families attended the event, which featured live entertainment, food service, and tents with activities for children. Attendees also had access to resources to learn more about the upcoming election.

Rodney Long, president of the African American Accountability Alliance, described the event as part of a recurring strategy to engage voters. “Our goal as the African American Accountability Alliance and our collaborative partners is to educate voters of who the candidates are, provide forums to hear from candidates, and then provide a day where they can come out and exercise their vote, hear good gospel music, also free lunch,” Long said.

Larry Daniel, another representative of the group, noted the practical benefits of the gathering. “We have great entertainment today. We have folks who are here that you can talk with prior to making your vote,” Daniel said. The event was one of several initiatives by local groups to boost participation ahead of the November 3 vote.

Alachua County election officials have announced that polls will open at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, November 3. They will close at 7 p.m. on Election Day. Residents who did not vote during the early period must report to their assigned precinct to cast their ballots.
