Fans in Atlanta witnessed a stark shift in the Georgia-Florida rivalry on Saturday. For the first time since 1933, the annual meeting was hosted in Georgia, specifically at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The change in venue coincided with a decisive 27-8 victory for the No. 3 Bulldogs over the No. 17 Gators.

The move to Atlanta was necessitated by a $1.4 billion renovation project at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville. The Bulldogs dominated the game statistically, forcing four turnovers and recording four sacks. They limited Florida to 54 rushing yards and shut the Gators out for the first three quarters.

Georgia coach Kirby Smart credited his defensive staff for keeping the scheme simple against Florida offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner. Smart noted that the defense disrupted the Gators' rhythm and prevented them from becoming one-dimensional. The Bulldogs’ defense allowed only two points in the final quarter.

The scoring sequence began with a Georgia field goal attempt that missed, leading to a quick turnover. Florida quarterback Aaron Philo threw a wild underhand pass that was intercepted by Georgia cornerback Ellis Robinson IV. This set the stage for a 7-0 lead for the Bulldogs. Georgia extended the margin to 10-0 with a field goal and reached 17-0 at halftime on a touchdown run by Bo Walker.

The margin ballooned to 24-0 just before halftime after a fumble by Florida quarterback Tramell Jones Jr. was returned 66 yards for a touchdown by Chris Cole. Jones had replaced Philo, who struggled with a shoulder injury earlier in the season. The Gators managed their only points in the fourth quarter when Jones ran in a two-yard touchdown and connected on a two-point conversion pass.

Florida coach Jon Sumrall acknowledged that his team’s mistakes contributed to the loss. He noted that the Gators were penalized eight times for 78 yards and threw three interceptions. Sumrall stated that the team is building a sustainable program and that every aspect of play requires improvement. He expressed respect for Georgia while accepting responsibility for the Gators' execution errors.

The result gives Georgia its sixth consecutive win against Florida. This streak matches the team's longest winning run in the series between 1978 and 1983. The Bulldogs improved to 9-2 against Florida during Smart's tenure. The game marked a rare departure from the traditional Jacksonville site, a pattern that has persisted for nearly a century.

Future scheduling plans place the 2027 matchup at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. The rivalry is expected to return to Jacksonville in 2028. The only other times the game was not played in Jacksonville in the past 93 seasons were in 1994 and 1995, both decided by Florida at campus venues.
