Kimi Antonelli is now the youngest driver to win the Formula 1 World Championship. The 20-year-old Italian secured the title on Sunday by finishing third in the Mexico City Grand Prix. That result gave him enough points to lead the standings, ending the season as the new champion.
Antonelli's path to the top began in 2014 at the German Grand Prix. His father, Marco Antonelli, raced in a support event. The then 7-year-old Kimi wanted to see the Formula 1 paddock but lacked access. He hid inside a stack of tires to get a look. Antonelli recalled the experience last year, noting that he did not know how he fit inside the tight space. The family even placed an umbrella on top to avoid looking suspicious.
The driver grew up under the shadow of F1 legends. His name, Kimi, was chosen by a family friend who was inspired by Finnish driver Kimi Raikkonen. Antonelli has said the name was not a direct tribute to the 2007 champion. It simply came to mind for a friend with a racing background. As he rose through the ranks, comparisons to Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton followed. He replaced Hamilton at Mercedes and was seen as a potential record breaker for youngest title winner.
Antonelli entered the sport through Mercedes' junior program after Ferrari passed on him. He moved from karting to cars in 2021, winning titles as he progressed. Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc praised Antonelli's ability to find the limit in his laps. Leclerc noted in September that Antonelli managed to deliver performance when it mattered most.
His 2024 debut was turbulent. During a practice session at the Italian Grand Prix, Antonelli crashed into the barrier. His first race season showed flashes of speed, including a pole position in Miami. However, he also made many mistakes. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff described some of his driving as underwhelming. Antonelli admitted that the pressure nearly destroyed him during that period. He felt he was letting down the people who believed in him.
The 2026 season brought major regulatory changes that favored Antonelli's aggressive style. He adapted better to the new electrical hybrid systems than his teammate, George Russell. Antonelli won his first race in China in March. He then won five races in a row. At the Italian Grand Prix this year, he started 19th on the grid. Despite an engine penalty, he drove to victory in a performance described as all-time great.
Russell highlighted Antonelli's strength in slippery conditions. He said Antonelli's driving style is perfect for the 2026 cars. Russell grouped Antonelli with McLaren's Lando Norris as the best-performing drivers of the season. Both drivers excel on low-grip tracks.
Antonelli stands alone as the youngest champion in F1 history. His title was confirmed in Mexico City. The season that began with a crash in 2024 ended with a world title in 2026.
