Justin Gomlak Greer has spent the last 15 years on Broadway, but his current role in Sarasota, Florida, focuses on the next generation of artists. He guest hosted Suncoast View on Thursday, a role that contrasts with his day-to-day work as the director of education and community engagement at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall.
Greer’s professional background extends beyond the marquee lights. He is trained as an opera singer and works as an arts educator and diversity, equity and inclusion practitioner. His academic credentials include a bachelor of fine arts degree in vocal performance and theatre from Carnegie Mellon University and a master of arts degree in educational leadership, politics and advocacy from New York University.
His New York stage career included specific, high-pressure roles that required versatility. He served as a swing and dance captain in the Roundabout Theatre Company’s revival of The Mystery of Edwin Drood. In the Broadway revival of Anything Goes, he covered 11 male roles. He was part of the original companies for Shrek the Musical, Urban Cowboy, and Seussical the Musical.
He also played both leading roles in The Producers, understudying Leo Bloom and Carmen Ghia. His credits include the Tony Award-winning revival of Annie Get Your Gun with Bernadette Peters. He most recently appeared as Lt. Ward and Henry Morganthau in the 2012 revival of Annie. Off-Broadway work includes Just Us Boys and the Hercules Summer Spectacular at the New Amsterdam Theatre, where he played Aladdin.
Greer’s teaching experience includes positions at the Trevor Day School and as a full-time performing arts specialist at Manhattan’s Dalton School. He has lectured on audition techniques, dance, acting, music, and performance for institutions such as Camp Broadway and the BRAVO television network. He toured the country as Gideon in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and worked with the Radio City Rockettes.
His next appearance on the Van Wezel stage is scheduled for Dec. 21. He will perform in A Very Broadway Christmas.
