Gas prices at the pump may rise again this week as the United States executed defensive strikes against Iranian positions in the Strait of Hormuz. The moves arrived on a Monday, just before voters head to the polls for the midterms.

An unnamed U.S. official speaking under condition of anonymity confirmed the action. He stated that American forces targeted "Iranians who use surface-to-air missiles against U.S. assets." Iranian state television reported hearing explosions on Qeshm Island, a strategic point in the waterway.

The strikes appeared limited in scope rather than a full return to all-out war. This timing contradicted a previous claim by President Donald Trump, who said the U.S. would not attack Iran before the midterms. The conflict has become a liability for Republicans as they fight to keep control of Congress.

Inflation from the war has already hit American households and the wider economy. JD Vance, the vice president, told reporters on Monday that he spoke with the president about ongoing talks with Tehran. Vance said, "The president and I feel pretty good about the chances of reaching a negotiated agreement."

The diplomatic push continues even as kinetic operations resume in the region. The strikes serve as a reminder that military pressure and negotiation are proceeding on parallel tracks. No further large-scale attacks were announced as of Monday afternoon.
