BP Reports $8.5 Billion Profit as Refining Margins Hit Record Levels
Surging demand for diesel and jet fuel pushed quarterly earnings nearly four times higher than a year ago, while the company cut net debt by over $12 billion.

BP posted an $8.5 billion profit for the third quarter on Friday, a figure nearly four times higher than the $2.2 billion reported in the same period last year. The surge in earnings reflects a sharp increase in refining margins, where the company earns the difference between the cost of crude oil and the price of finished products like gasoline and diesel. Analysts had forecast the underlying replacement cost profit at $6.19 billion, making the actual result a substantial beat on Wall Street expectations.
The spike in profitability is driven by global disruptions in energy supply. Outages and damage to refineries resulting from the war in Ukraine and conflicts in the Middle East have tightened fuel markets. This scarcity has forced shipping routes to lengthen and pushed product prices higher relative to crude oil. BP stated that its performance was boosted by gas and marketing trading activities, alongside what it described as significantly higher realized refining margins.
Meg O'Neill, the chief executive officer of BP, noted that the industry has shown adaptability in the face of trade flow disruptions. She explained that refineries are operating close to capacity to compensate for shortages, while strategic and commercial reserve releases help bridge supply gaps. O'Neill told CNBC's Squawk Box Europe that the company's refining indicator margin reached $46.70 per barrel for the quarter. She described this figure as incredibly strong, citing a refining reliability rate of over 96% that allowed the company to adjust production to meet specific product demands.
Rivals Shell and TotalEnergies reported similar trends on Thursday, stating that their refining margins also hit historically high levels. Traders have reacted to unpredictable news flows from the United States and the war between Israel and Iran, causing benchmark crude prices to remain nearly double their level from a year ago. Analysts continue to monitor whether these high energy prices will eventually reduce consumer demand, a dynamic that could ease pressure on constrained refining facilities.
BP's financial position improved significantly across the first nine months of 2026. Operating cash flow reached $28.55 billion, up from $16.89 billion in the same period of 2025. At the same time, net debt fell to $13.87 billion, down from $26.05 billion a year earlier. These figures align with a strategy announced last year that pivots the company back toward traditional oil and gas operations while reducing its focus on renewables.
O'Neill said the company is strengthening its balance sheet to ensure shareholders are rewarded through market cycles. She acknowledged that while oil prices are currently strong, historical patterns suggest they will eventually decline. To prepare for this, BP is designing a financial framework that allows for consistent returns regardless of price volatility. The company also announced a consolidation of its leadership structure as part of this strategic shift.
The financial results also address lingering obligations from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. BP still owes $5.9 billion to the U.S. government and states for settlements related to the disaster. O'Neill said the company intends to ringfence extra cash to cover these payments, ensuring the debt does not compromise future operations. She described the spill as an incredible tragedy that shaped the company's approach to risk and resilience.
O'Neill emphasized that the company has embedded the lessons from the spill into its operations. She stated that BP remains committed to addressing these financial obligations to become a more resilient entity in future years. The focus is on running facilities safely and reliably to capture market opportunities while managing long-term liabilities.
