Cummings Research Park, the second-largest research park in the United States, is adding a mixed-use project as it works to move beyond its reputation as a purely high-tech business campus. A groundbreaking ceremony for the development, called Arcadia, took place Monday in Huntsville.

The ceremony marked the latest step in the park's ongoing expansion, which is aimed at improving its ability to recruit both businesses and people. Arcadia will sit at the corner of Bradford and Wynn Drive, directly across from the Alabama School of Cyber Technology and Engineering.

Three companies are behind the project: Bobo Development Group, Retail Specialists and Huntsville-based BoAz Ventures. Capstone Building has already started construction, and Williams Blackstock Engineering handled the design and engineering work.

Once finished, Arcadia will rise six stories. It is planned to include 250 residential units, 12,000 square feet of office space, and 7,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space. The residential and commercial units are scheduled for delivery in late 2024.

James Bobo, chief executive officer of Florence-based Bobo Development Group, said the timing suits the market. "With Huntsville's current and projected growth, this new project is breaking ground at a perfect time," he said. He added that Arcadia is arriving as the city's population boom drives demand for housing.

Bobo also pointed to the planned amenities as a draw for future residents. In his words, the retail and restaurant options that will accompany the apartments are "ideal for someone that wants to live and work in a high-end development."

Robert Jolly, chief executive officer of Retail Specialists, described the groundbreaking as an exciting moment for everyone on the development team. He said the project will be a significant one for both Huntsville and Cummings Research Park, and expressed hope that it will serve as "a catalyst for continued growth in the area."

Bobo said his team was pleased to hold the event in the Rocket City, calling Arcadia "a project that our team is really proud of."
